Steel is widely used in construction, automotive manufacturing and heavy industry. RP8’s steel interests include sourcing and trading, alongside the proposed partner-led approach to redundant rail materials described below.
Copper
Copper is used in electrical wiring, plumbing, telecommunications and electronics. RP8’s metals services include sourcing and trading copper to meet client requirements.
Nickel
Nickel is used in stainless steel and corrosion-resistant alloys. RP8’s metals services include sourcing and trading nickel for industrial applications.
Our circular economy approach
RP8 is developing a circular economy approach to railway steel and other materials that are no longer needed for their original purpose. Working with suitably qualified partners, we aim to identify and recover these materials, assess opportunities for safe reuse or repurposing, and direct remaining materials to responsible recycling routes. Our approach will seek efficient, lower-carbon logistics where practicable, clear records and transparent governance throughout the material journey. The goal is to preserve value, reduce avoidable waste and deliver measurable benefits for partners, infrastructure and local communities.
1. Assess for reuse
Assess material condition and suitability to identify safe, practical opportunities for reuse.
2. Recover and sort
Work with qualified partners to recover and separate materials by type, condition and intended use.
3. Recycle responsibly
Identify appropriate recycling routes through authorised operators where reuse is unsuitable.
4. Record destinations and outcomes
Record quantities, receiving destinations and evidence of reuse, recycling or other treatment.
As the approach develops, we will explore opportunities to involve local suppliers, support relevant skills and create community value alongside our partners. We also intend to track the quantities and destinations of recovered materials, the outcomes achieved through reuse, repurposing and recycling, and any agreed community contributions. This will allow us to report meaningful results once work is under way and evidence is available.
